You’d think that since Russians apparently invented the stupid “game”, they would know how it works.
You can’t put one round in the magazine of an autoloader, and not expect it to fire after you rack the slide and pull the trigger.

After watching the video, this is how I believe it went down:
20 seconds – Guy #1 is carrying the gun (a Makarov PM) in some type of small (pocket?) holster.
23 seconds – Guy #1 removes holster and throws it onto the table.
24 seconds – Guy #1 pretends to load the gun by racking the slide, but only pulls it back slightly, so no bullet chambers.
29 seconds – You can tell that Guy #1 does not pull the trigger. The sound you hear is likely him clicking the slide mounted safety off.
32 seconds – Guy #1 racks the slide and puts a round into the chamber.
35 seconds – Guy #2 pulls trigger and discharges round into his head, as 2 of the onlookers realize he does not know the “click the safety for the sound” trick :roll:
I would never in a million years consider doing anything so stupid with a gun. “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes” as they say.
As usual, Jeff Cooper‘s rules apply here.. most relevant are #1 and #2:
- All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.
- Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy. (For those who insist that this particular gun is unloaded, see Rule 1.)
- Keep your finger off the trigger till your sights are on the target. This is the Golden Rule. Its violation is directly responsible for about 60 percent of inadvertent discharges.
- Identify your target, and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything that you have not positively identified.

According to that Wikipedia article, the safety blocks the hammer from striking the rear of the firing pin. Does that mean that when the safety is engaged the hammer still falls forward, just not far enough to strike the firing pin? Because in the video it looks like the hammer moves forward when the first guy has it. At first I thought maybe it was the result of a decocking lever.
He doesn’t pull the trigger (as seen in the video) because when he rotates the de-cocking lever / safety, the hammer drops and hits a piece of solid metal rather than the firing pin, hence making a sound almost identical to what you would hear if he actually pulled the trigger and the gun didn’t fire.
In the Walther PP (which is what the Makarov is based on), throwing the safety also decocks the hammer and places it on said solid metal. I can assume that it is the same thing with the Makarov. Still, bad plan. REALLY bad plan.
Wish people would have more sense, you know? I would never put a gun to my head and pull the trigger. But I’m Ukrainian, I guess we just aren’t as ballsy as those Russians.

Yea terrible :( According to the article the guy in the white shirt was arrested, and I’m sure that is only the beginning of what will happen to him.
Interesting update – I just read elsewhere that the pistol was a Baikal IZH-79-9, a pistol that only fires less than lethal rounds. Apparently it has a safety that also decocks it (I was thinking of decocking levers like on a Sig earlier, that don’t also act as safety). So, the guy shot himself in the head with a rubber bullet. Bummer, at least a real bullet would have killed him outright instead of leaving him paralyzed and with brain damage, as the story indicated.
Interesting. When I saw “rubber bullet” in the news article I thought they were talking about a Glaser safety slug, or something similar with a polymer component to it. That Baikal makes more sense though.. plus it looks almost identical to the Makarov
