You can’t make stuff this funny up… but its true:
They have 3 separate trademarks on it actually, in the following goods and services categories:
- Clothing, footwear and headwear (#85310957)
- Entertainment and education services (#85310970)
- Toys, games and playthings; gymnastic and sporting articles (except clothing); hand-held units for playing electronic games other than those adapted for use with an external display screen or monitor; Christmas stockings; Christmas tree ornaments and decorations; snow globes (#85310966)
I don’t know about you guys, but I for one welcome the “Osama Bin Laden Is Dead” snowglobe. I hear that in the prototype he’s laying on the bottom of it with a hole in his ceramic head and there are red pieces in there that float around with the snow when you shake it. Also, rumor has it there is no water in the globe, only bacon grease.

WTF? I hope the next thing Seal Team 6 takes out is Mickey Mouse. In the mean time I’m going to go trademark “Semper Fi” and “Blue Angels”…
Really, the amount BS we let large corporations do dumbfounds me.
You might try looking those up at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office; somebody has beaten you to both. In the case of the latter, it’s been trademarked by the Department of the Navy – but it’s not just the words, it’s the distinctive mark and design associated with it. In the case of the former – it’s a generic phrase in Latin; it would be like trying to trademark the phrase “et cetera.”
It’s stupid that Disney would do it, sure. On the other hand, it’s funny. The gov’t denies the existence of something, so somebody trademarks the name of what doesn’t exist… that’s funny from a legal perspective. Do you know how many registered trademarks there are that contain the phrase “Area 51”?
This is sad. Disney takes and patented something that they didn’t make or earn to make a buck.
I bet Disney goes 1 step further and has all the merchandise made in China to further compound the insult to stealing the Team’s name designation.
Disney isn’t trying to “patent” anything.
I heard this on the radio this morning half-asleep, thus thinking it wasn’t real…
Just another way for a big corporation to make money off of American heros. What the hell did Dizzney have to do with the Seal team? And what do you bet that they don’t share in the profits with the Seal Team?
I’ll bet they wouldn’t even let them into their theme parks without paying first!
If the government doesn’t acknowledge the existence of something called “Seal Team 6,” and, denies its existence, how can you prevent the name from being claimed by another person, or business entity?
Look for a CGI animated movie about talking Seals who are special forces commandos, who take out environmental criminals and never use the word “terrorist”.
I can just imagine the atrocious soon to be released Disney flick. Don’t tell me, let me guess……it’s going to involve seals. Seriously, this is about as predictable as it gets.
