Flare guns for self defense? The gun store guys take a look:
They don’t look “ideal”, but they definitely are better than nothing. I can’t imagine there is a criminal out that that would want to be shot with something that burns so hot. Plus, the business end of the gun looks intimidating because of the large bore diameter, so they would likely get the crap scared out of them even if they didn’t immediately know it just shot flares.
God I love that Hi-Point testing suit (featured in the later half of this video)

Arthur got some upgrades for christmas i think
I question the wisdom of giving out a source that makes adapters to turn a flare gun into something in violation of the NFA. Even with the warning to obey the rules the video would have been fine without that hint. Bubbas getting caught doing stupid things makes for bad laws for all of us.
……i can buy a 10.5″ AR15 upper for my rifle if i want to. its up to the user to decide if they want to violate the NFA.
i know i hear all the time about people making illegal AR15 SBRs for not complying with the NFA….oh wait, i dont.
is it a bad idea to violate the NFA, youre goddamn right it is. is it as big of a problem as people think? no, not really. them saying “yeah these flare guns are cool, and if you want a cool AOW you can buy an adapter for .410, 12 gauge etc for them!” probably wont amount to anything.
Somebody break out the bear-bangers.
My uncle, a charter boat captain who lived in a gun unfriendly state and often traveled into Canada, has been carrying a flare gun as a self-defense plan b for a long time. Since it’s a safety device it can be carried loaded anywhere.
I have been wondering about this subject for years, thanks for posting this. Though I don’t think a flare gun is going to be replacing any of my CCW pieces.
I think getting a 12 ga flare into your torso that burns for 8 seconds would be a good definition for “really bad day”. Potentially lethal? Do ya think?
I think so as well. But I saw an ad from CTD about non-lethal rounds. So I asked the Q over at the USCCA Forum.
Basically the reply was that unless you absolutely have to — have live, lethal rounds at your disposal.
even if it didnt the fire it starts in your shirt/jacket/wifebeater/chest hair isnt gonna be fun
