It’s Raining Lead – Hallelujah

Apparently this happened after church in Iraq, the fun starts at 30 seconds:

Nothing like a crowd of people pumping rounds straight up in the air in the middle of an urban development.   Actually I’d be more worried about peoples lack of muzzle discipline and complete carelessness than I would be about getting hurt by a falling bullet.

Typical LiveLeak, never giving any solid backstory or source.  Anyone have more info on this? Looks pretty crazy.

I am constantly surprised that most of the stupidity I post about on here, results in everyone walking away unscathed.

That link is pretty much all I have to say. Well that and I wish I could post pics on here.

Actually I guess I could also ask how many people in that country die from falling lead every day because of shit like this.

      haha nice pic.

The problem with posting pics is that most people don’t know how to properly save a picture for the web. If enabled pics in comments, you’d have people posting 1920x1080px images off their digital camera etc.. that were MB in size thus slowing down the entire site.

      1. Didn’t Mythbusters disprove that? They said a falling bullet can’t kill you.

Of course that’s only if it’s shot straight up. If the round is fired a a low enough angle then it’s assumed the bullet is gonna kill someone.

        1. 1000 ways to die would disagree quite strongly with mythbusters then. I guess it boils down to which flavor of kool aid you like better.

1000 ways to die is somewhat unreliable. I think it has to do with the physical weight of the bullet and it’s freefall terminal velocity (and if it reaches it or not.)

This seems like a horrible waste of ammo. Also, am I the only one who would be a little concerned about catching a piece of brass in the eye from the people next to me?

            1. No, just no.

You CAN NOT TRUST ANYTHING SPIKE TV TELLS YOU. Remember, this is the same channel that produced “Deadliest Warrior.” A show were the most historically accurate representation of ancient warriors was showing the fact the most Spartans had two arms and two legs.

I’m taking the word of two certifiable experts in there fields over a couple of screaming, pissy fanboys.

          2. I don’t think I would trust anything I saw on Spike TV either. I remember seeing the Mythbusters episode a long time ago, and if I recall correctly, their conclusion was based on the bullet being fired straight up, then losing momentum and tumbling as it fell back to earth. I think in their experiments, the bullet fell basically sideways and never regained a nose-forward attitude. I think if a bullet were fired, even at a pretty steep angle, but not straight up, it would maintain a ballistic trajectory, and keep its nose-forward position. If it’s a heavy bullet, even if it’s being propelled only by gravity, I would think it would still be pretty dangerous.

Well, I just checked with a medical professional, after doing a lot of research, a 147 grain (.336 ounces) 9mm bullet hits top velocity, falling straight, nose down at about 150fps or about 95mph. He claims that it probably wouldn’t be lethal if it hit the top of the skull (especially because lead is soft and would flatten). But, he says, it would most likely hurt like hell, and could easily cause some damage. In short “I wouldn’t want to be underneath that”.

              1. I’m sure there will always be conflicting opinions about this. Here are a couple of articles I found regarding the subject. Sufficed to say, I wouldn’t like to be standing under a falling bullet, and if it’s got a full copper jacket, the softness of the lead, I would think, no longer matters.

I think it’s best that they just keep doing this overseas and we don’t adopt this sort of behavior here!

With more calculating we’ve determined that it (the 9mm bullet) lands with roughly 15 foot pounds of force (or 20 joules). The medical professional says this would definitely penetrate human tissue, but could not penetrate the skull, even when focused on a point roughly 1/3 of an inch in size. He equated it to being struck with a tacking hammer.

  2. U can make it auto size pics man easy (just code it into your site).. id do thumbnails but easier to just not allow it sure.

Umm this video im sure has to do with some sort of celibration and of course they never care about gun safety over there I’ve seen some crazy stuff over the years im sure so have other soldiers and people that have been there.

Letting people upload to the site is a security risk. I don’t like the idea of external linking either because it increases external requests and slows things down as well. If it’s something you guys really want I’ll try to think of a way to do it which will make us both happy.

      1. Don’t do it. I am extremely immature and have zero impulse control. Seriously, I’ve spammed places with offensive imagery before. I’m begging you, please don’t tempt me. This isn’t a threat, but it’s like shaking a bottle of whiskey in front of a recovering alcoholic.

I’ve been banned from so many forums…

        1. Yea, as much as it would up my post count, and therefore maybe get me a free t-shirt or something. It would more likely just lead to me spamming the crap out of the news stories with funny image macros. I’d hate to tarnish my “somewhat okay reputation” by doing so.

          ;)

By external linking, do you mean that it slows things down if I were to link to a picture that I put on a site like Mediafire? I’ve used that before to share photos and spreadsheets, but if linking like that slows things down, I wasn’t aware.

        1. ENDO-Mike Avatar

I don’t think your on the same page as what I’m talking about Josh.. but if by “link” you mean “embed” then yes. If I was to allow you to embed a 5MB picture (for example) off mediafire on here yes it would increase the load time because that picture would load for everyone. It doesn’t matter if it’s on my server or not, it still will be downloaded for every visitor to see. I could resize, downsample, and cache the uploaded pictures, but that sounds like more trouble than it’s worth. As it stands, I prefer just letting you guys post links to pictures, that way only external requests for pictures are made when people decide they want to see them.

          1. I see what you’re saying. You used the word “linking” at first and it confused me a little. I wouldn’t allow embedding if I were you either; there are plenty of sites (like the Mediafire site I’ve used) that allow free uploading of files and provide links to them that can be posted and accessed by anyone.

        2. ENDO-Mike Avatar

ah I did use the term “external linking” in my original post … I meant embedding.

      3. Giving people the ability to upload images is the least worry for website security. Be more worried about the number of bots roaming out there looking for exploits.

  3. Words… they fail me. I would actually be more concerned with severe hearing loss after listening to the equivalent of a freaking army division firing in a semi enclosed space. I can’t imagine anyone in that group being able to hear anything below a dull roar after that.

  4. So, do they have super awesome Alaska-esque gun laws over there in Iraq and Saudi-Arabia or do the cops just suck at regulation?

    1. Gun laws in Iraq? Can those words be used together in a sentence?

I had to have a squad in my platoon hunker down while a VIP escort moved passed our position. The escort vehicles were directing traffic away from the convoy with (I kid you not) short bursts of fire from the pintel-mounted machine guns. And not just once or twice. We tracked the entire movement of the convoy by the sound of gunfire from the escorts.

The police direct traffic with an AK. If they want you to turn left, they point the AK at you and then point it ot the left. If they need back-up, then their buddy is in the checkpoint with an RPK. The other buddy has an RPG.

Gun laws in Iraq. Ha ha ha …..

      1. I guess you’re right. Having gun-laws would imply that the two countries aren’t run by morons.

  5. It reminds me of that other video mike posted way back where they appeared to be a a picnic and started shooting in the air to wierd music.

*Pictures aren’t really needed im sure if someone has something to share they can submit it to you. Question I have is if the bw effects the site you either are getting high amounts of traffic or you need to upgrade your host bro.. maybe both. I’ve owned tons of successful sites over there years with lots of traffic and allowed some posting of images and it didnt effect me much. Linked images or videos wont effect your traffic that much I’d be more worried with legal aspects or the type of media. Then again a simple TOS included with a check box would fix that.

  6. Poppy whats wrong with alaska bro? lol

    1. They let you have guns that can hold five clips to the stock, everything’s completely unregulated! I also used to live there but can never go back, too many painful memories.

My parents were killed by barrel shrouds.

      1. Those shoulder things that go up can really be devastating…

  8. Hey Iraqi flashmob, you’re doing it wrong.

  9. Ammo must be cheap in Iraq.
I would like some background on this as well. It looks to be a Christian church gathering in a predominantly Muslim country. Is the gunfire in protest of something? Perhaps support of something. Inquiring minds want to know.

    1. I’ve heard that Christian churches are often armed in that area of the world in order to protect themselves from Islamic threats. At the synagogue I go to most of the men are armed ’cause the mosque down the street threatened to attack us for so arbitrary reason. And if Muslim violence is a danger here in the free world imagine how bad it must be in the Islamic world.

As for the gunfire, it’s a tradition to fire weaponry during times of celebration. It’s a much louder (and badass) way of clapping. I remember a while ago the military accidentally shot at a wedding ’cause everyone there was armed AND firing upwards. Not something you want to do whilst an American spy-plane is overhead.

  10. i was going to ask, where is the footage of the airstrike?

  11. also, i saw a lot of Berettas and shotguns. are we sure this isn’t Italy?

  12. this is so much cooler than catholic potlucks every third sunday after mass!
