I went to NRA Pittsburgh and the Umarex guys showed me some stuff that was amazing. One of my students just bought a $400 airsoft sniper rifle and I gotta say that it looks VERY realistic without the plastic tip.

I don’t dispute the fact that some of them look real.
I almost threw up on my mouth when I read $400 though, considering a real Remington 700 (for example) is barely double that.

I know. From what they (my students) told me, there are miniguns and such that can cost thousands, and I have no reason to doubt them. As a shooter and scuba diver, I have seen some outrageously expensive equipment that I know people don’t want to live without.

You have no idea; they make a replica Barrett M82A1 for $4000 and many other belt fed replicas (i.e. M249 etc.) for around $800,(these are usually gas operated, full aluminum and wood repros). A “plastic” AEG M249 by comparison is about $150-250)

I just got a gas powered 1911 to use at home. I can’t make it to the range as much as I’d like and the airsoft gun (I hope) will help me train for drawing, establishing grip, and getting my sights on quicker. Basically everything but reloading for IPSC/IDPA. I figure it can’t be any worse than a .22 which cause some people to scoff and dismiss as a real training aid.

I used to be into airsoft. I used to buy the Tokyo Marui brand from overseas. It would take like two months to get here because of customs. It also doesn’t come with orange tips haha.
And yeah, I stopped messing with airsoft when I got real guns also.

I stopped buying the stuff when I got into the real deal (some cost as much as real guns!). I just recently heard about their use in force on force training that sounds really useful though – http://www.warriortalknews.com/2010/06/force-on-force–controversy.html

Made the model versions of these in my youth – now stuck on the wall causing all my neighbours to look at moving :)
