Lockheed Martin – Human Universal Load Carrier (HULC)

Dismounted Soldiers often carry heavy combat loads that increase the stress on the body leading to potential injuries. With a HULC exoskeleton, these loads are transferred to the ground through powered titanium legs without loss of mobility.

Gotta love technology. Might as well just go one step further and in case every soldier in an IronMan style climate controlled bulletproof suit; I’m sure that’s coming.

  1. A solution looking for a problem………and a bunch of government funding? Power supply, electronics, lots of moving parts, then wear and tear, etc……..I just have a gut feeling that the practicality of this wont shake out in the end.

If anything maybe mortar teams might benefit in A-stan type of terrain with this thing. But over all seems like alot of tech and extra hardware for problems that can be solved else wise.

I agree, it seems like the kind of thing that is all fine and dandy when it’s working well.. but if something screws up you could probably get hurt really bad. Hopefully they can simplify it more to make it more practical.

  2. I don’t think these are meant for every soldier to have, just those that have large equipment to carry.

I slightly remember my uncle showing me a video on these a few years ago, and if I am not mistaken he was working on the team developing them. He is visiting this week so I will ask him a few questions about.

My nephew is correct, I am working on these.

  4. Dan’s Uncle,

Get off the internet, I asked you to take out the garbage hours ago.

    1. Haha, very funny Jordan

  5. Looks like in one shot they hung his body armor from the HULC. That’s a pretty neat idea – perhaps eventually they could develop full-body armor for it as well. Iron Man (sans flying) here we come!

I really like how they called it the H.U.L.C. —> HULK

I think every single one of these needs to come standard with a tin of green facepaint and a pair of purple ACU pants that are just torn all to hell.

Yea I like when companies give cool stuff like this a good name. Easier to remember too rather than some long model number. I like your idea for the standard uniform to come with it hahah

  7. Saw this vid online months ago on the companies web page ( I work for LM). This concept is interesting. Personally I find the 4 legged robot from a few weeks ago more appealing.

I agree, the 4 legged one is awesome… I guess as of now though we still unfortunately need humans to preform some of the dangerous tasks hands on because it would be too awkward to send one of those other robots in. Hopefully the dexterity of those other ones will improve.
