DIY Ammo Can Speaker Box

Check out the tutorial over at Instructables.  The top picture I actually grabbed from a company called thodio‘s website, where they make the ammo can speakers and sell them.  If you have more money than time and know-how, you can pick one up from them for $307 – $430 depending on the specs you want.

If you need an empty ammo can you can pick one up at your local surplus store for cheap, or on Amazon the price isn’t that bad either.

I don’t know how good of sound these things throw, but I imagine it’s probably good enough for the beach or a night of parking lot drinking.  Just be prepared to have more guys than girls impressed with your DIY expertise.

Thoughts?

they are twice that price in canuckistan :(

  2. I have a friend that makes these out of coolers for bicyclists (battery powered) and he recently did one of an old style Army-ish medical first aid kit.

No man, thats fucking bad ass. Nothing tacticool about it. If it was milled out of aluminum or had a bunch of rails on it; yeah tacicool-fail, but nah man this thing is hella rad.

    2. No, the way you call it “tacticool” is pretty gay.

  5. Fucking Sweet actually!

    1. According to the construction details it:
      >This instructable will demonstrate how to turn a .50 caliber
      >ammunition box into a sweet set of speakers that can be used
      >with your mp3 player, laptop, or any other portable device.
      >
      >This set of speakers is rugged, compact, easy to take on the go, and LOUD!
      >The whole project will cost about $50.00 usd. and can be completed in an afternoon.

      1. I guess you are referring to the “$50” to build part? No one has a damn clue why you posted, make it obvious.

I’m guessing that they were using cheaper parts. Speakers under 50??? The probably sound like complete shit. I foresee a quality amp and speakers alone costing more than 50; you get what you pay for.

I made mine out of a the Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) OR “Fat 50” ammo box which is slightly bigger and offers a little more air volume.

    1. so post the image of it! all I see is a random ammo can!

  7. Here is a pic of mine.

This cost at least a $110 when it was all done.

    $60 for the speakers
$20 for the Fat 50 ammo box
    $ 20 for amp
$10 for connectors, wire, switch, Led lamp

Fun, somewhat expensive if you are thrifty, lol!

Why is this not called a boom box?

  9. Hey guys, would love your thoughts on our similar build (link below). We are a bit obsessive with this stuff and experimented for over a year to get it just right. 100% agree with jd in Atlanta above that the Fat 50s sound MUCH better than normal 50 cal ammo can. :-)

    Rock On!
