I like the normal 4 rules… but I’m not going to complain. Frankly I’m happy to see anything positive about guns or self defense on a mainstream tvshow.
The self defense talk, and the telling the mom to chill out “It’s fine”, not “OMG guns! Run for cover! Call the police!” was awesome. Also:
The biggest mistake we could make, is pretending my gun does not exist in this house.
I like this writer. Will I check the show out? Possibly, now that it’s on my radar and I see all the episodes are up on amazon instant video. Don’t forget that stuff is free for Amazon prime members. I’m assuming i’ll probably just be disappointed because i’ll be comparing it to The Wire which is also up on Amazon for free (if you have Prime). Tom Selleck’s mustache appears to deliver (as expected) by the look of the promo shots, so that’s a good sign.
Thoughts?

I only saw the first few episodes of the first season but I really liked it. I’ve always been a Tom Selleck fan and the rest of the cast ain’t bad either.
This has to do more with Tom Selleck being an NRA board member and getting progun material into the show he stars in. If you watched the Jesse Stone series on TV you would have seen clips on proper handgun techniques. Selleck is good about getting these things in his shows.
Its a decent primetime cop show. Don’t compare it to the Wire, you’ll be sorely disappointed. It’s more like Law and Order.
Being an old guy, this is super. After decades of asshat gun handling on TV and a constant drum beat of “guns are baaaad”, it’s good to see something positive..
Ya this is good, its not ‘pro gun’ its just gun education, its good to know gun safety for everyone, and it MAY let people rethink their gun misconceptions
As has been said, I’m also confident Tom Sellecks’ involvement has a lot to do with how gun issues are dealt with on “Blue Bloods”. Let there be no doubt…..this is a real effort, within an otherwise horrible mainstream TV line-up, to portray family, duty, character and Faith in a very positive light.
For those reasons, I am a big fan of this series.
This has to be in the top 5 comments I have ever read here.
Agreed!
“Last man standing”, the new Tim Allen TV show. I can not believe that it has stayed on as long as it has. Gun’s shown though out each episode, even “bad black guns”, mentions made about owning firearms and hunting and no liberal claptrap about it. The father, mother and three daughters living in a house with “GUNS” in it and after 11 eps not one has been about saving the children from the horrors of firearms.
The show is also kind of funny, if you liked Home Improvement.
Blue Bloods, Jesse stone and now this, I think the end times are coming!
This is a show that I’ve watched since the beginning. There are moments where it’s “meh”, but overall, it’s very well done. Can’t argue with a show that shows an entire family sitting down to Sunday dinner (every episode has at least one scene at the dinner table) and talking about the issues for the show. While some of the talk is out there, everyone’s opinion is given equal weight or is discussed in a rational, reasonable way.
It’s one of the few shows on now that I don’t feel like I’m being insulted every week.
Blue Bloods is one of the few network shows I watch, but it’s still network – it’s Law and Order-ish, but old school Law & Order, not social workers with badges which is what SVU has become (Christopher Meloni is sorely missed). Blue Bloods is not to be compared to the Wire which for me is like Shakespeare – I think the Wire may have been the best thing every made on film or video, ever. Stringer Bell is my idol.
Bridget Moynahan on Blue Bloods is enough for me, but Tom Selleck carrying a Fitz special takes the cake. Also it’s comical how they try to make Jennifer Esposito not hot – she always wears a silly hat. It must be in Moynahan’s contract – any other ridiculously hot women on the show must wear a silly hat at all times.
Blue Bloods is my guilty pleasure. First of all, its good to see a positive portrayal of Law Enforcement in the media. Also, they tackle interesting social issues. Both sides get represented decently.
I started watching it because I found out through this blog Tom Selleck is in it and D. Wahlberg, the latter of which is an underrated actor. Hollywood type-casts Wahlberg pretty well though as a detective.
I thought I smelled Wahlberg. I thought it was just my imagination.
I only watched a few episodes of it. It felt too much like Hill Street Blues meets Desperate Housewives. But that was a good clip.
I have a co-worker who made the comment “She doesn’t like guns”, but at the same time, her extended family has been the victim of violent crime. I’d like to show her that guns are at least inanimate objects, and are not bad by themselves.
Almost exactly how conversations with my wife go. Right before I PUNCH HER IN THE FACE.
It’s the rules of short-form drama that require guns to be imbued with some sort of talismanic significance. Chekov’s Gun, and all that. Props to the writers for not making Donny a gunny-gunny-gun nut and not making his wife an unthinking anti-gun harpy. We’ll all be better when TV can show a pistol as just a thing, like knives in the kitchen. “It’s not a toy, OK? Now show me the Mozambique.”
