Confrontations Like You’re Starring In An Action Movie

Sweet mother of god, it’s a gun not a Houdini proof 37 digit combination lock.  His other reason not to use an attackers gun on them is that you “might end up hitting an 8 year old girl that’s an innocent bystander”?  He also says he wouldn’t throw the gun away… so NOW he has a useless paperweight in his hand and he’s still trying to “finish the fight” with the tools he had when it started.  Are all Krav Maga guys like this?  It’s a serious question.

everything-could-be-a-trollI don’t see a problem with trying the gun at least once.  Sure it might have the safety on, or not have a round in the chamber… but if you’ve shot a few different guns you know what to do.  I imagine if you trained for it, it would come even easier.  Seems stupid to me not to try considering you now have what basically amounts to a confrontation ender in your hands.  Beating someone with their own gun, or incapacitating them with your ill hand to hand skills makes for a lot cooler of a story to tell your friends though I’ll give him that.

I’m starting to think that it’s not only the Instructor Zero videos which are being made to troll.  Anyone else feel that way too?

8 YEAR OLD GIRL THAT’S JUST AN INNOCENT BYSTANDER?! In the immortal words of Will Smith in Men in Black “Then I saw little Tiffany. 8 year old white girl, middle of the ghetto bunch of monsters this time of night with quantum physics books.. she about to start some shit.”

  4. Experts don’t dispense good advice, they make their living taking everything too far to prove that they are experts. If I have to take a gun away, they are lucky if I just beat them with it. I’m w/ Mr Garrison above. Well, not like that…

  5. I get his reasoning, he trains people people who don’t know guns to fight hand-to-hand. In that scenario, yeah, don’t try with the gun.
Really you’ve only dissarmed a guy who wants to kill you, he still wants you dead. Respond in whatever means are best suited to you.

I think what he’s saying (it’s not completely clear; and it’s hard to say in the abstract) is something like “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” I’d say it applies to everyone, no matter how skilled.

In other words, if you’ve got enough control of him and the weapon to finish, then you’ve already got 99% of what you want. Why give that up? Same thing if the gun were instead 5 feet away. If you step back, however, then you’re giving him space to work if: the gun isn’t loaded, you slip, there’s a malfunction, a miss or though-and-through, or he wants to spend his last 30 seconds fighting with all he’s got to kill you, etc. Plus, you’ve now placed yourself in a position where you may have to shoot to finish (risking alerting or angering his cohorts, the possibility of criminal or civil jeopardy, the psychological consequences of having killed someone, etc.).

As an analogy, if you’re up by one, he’s suggesting it’s often better to take a knee on the 1-yard line and turn the ball over with two seconds than it is to try and punch it in and kick-off.

  6. I only have my own life experiences to share, but most if not all guys I’ve met who learn Krav Maga have never been in a real, honest to God fight in their lives.

Krav seems to be really popular with the Call of Duty types who want to take a martial art and search for the most OP thing on the market. Enter the Krav McDojo

  7. The reason krav maga was formed was to teach people to defend themselves in the shortest possible time. Krav makes little effort to teach civilians how to handle a firearm, especially one they may never have encountered before.

We’ve all seen people on the range who don’t know how to do even the most basic manipulations with a firearm. That’s who this technique is for. If you can do a takeaway then get the gun working and shoot the guy, good for you!

    1. As a fighter myself, I can say that Commerical Krav Maga makes little effort to teach people how to fight – period.

      1. It’s like any other popular martial art…some schools take it seriously, some jump on the bandwagon for $. Some organizations incorporate sparring/active resistance early on, some barely make use of it at all.

        1. If a student struggles to manipulate a firearm, I doubt they are in a position to pull off a complicated disarm and then be in such fight dominance that they can afford to not use the firearm. I will wager then too, that the student has not received adequate basic technical fight training. Really, this advice is designed for the kind of person the instructor knows can’t handle this advice. It’s terrible.

A better use of this imaginary student’s time is to get a CCW permit, learn shooting basics, and practice those.

          1. I disagree. Plenty of people are athletic and coordinated enough to pull this off and either have no interest in learning to use a gun or aren’t allowed to.

I do agree that firearm training and ccw are great options. But there’s nothing wrong with supplementing that with other skills.

  8. I’m going to start a YouTube channel called ‘Kommon Zen’s Krav Maga’ (with me, Kommon Zen!) and dispense practical self-defense tips like: “Don’t go to that shitty bar with your friend who always gets in fights” or “City main streets are a thing. Why are you walking down that dark alley?” or my favorite, “You are a cock. It is the main reason you get into trouble”.

Most videos will be about 30 seconds long.

  9. I’m in a real pickle here. I’d like to learn more hand-to-hand stuff, but I’m pretty sure 99.99995% of “training” out there is bullshit. To get the full effect, I think you have to join an MMA or boxing gym and get punched in the face full force to get used to fighting. I’m not a fighter, and I know it. I’d still like to get a little better at it. The problem is that if you join an MMA or boxing gym, you’re going to get hurt. I make my living with my two hands, so getting hurt at a gym isn’t an option for me. And I don’t want to get bad training, and then get my ass kicked–as is common outside Fort Benning when a GFT Level 1 class graduates, hits the bars to start a fight, and gets their ass handed to them by a 145lb biker on speed (I’ve never seen this, but I have friends who did GFT1 and they were warned that it happens every cycle).

I guess my thought process leans more towards the legal aspects. If you have disarmed the aggressor and reduced his threat level, in some jurisdictions, shooting the person after may get you a homicide or manslaughter charge.
