The interesting part of the apple photo is how it was taken:
The process was done in a dark room with the camera shutter fixed open (or just on a really long exposure), and the actual exposure was triggered by a flash (high-speed, short duration). In turn, the flash was triggered by a microphone. This process was repeated several times with the microphone placed various distances from the gun until the desired exposure was captured.
