James Yeager On Active Shooter Response

Good Guy Yeager continues:

I don’t carry a gun for self defense.  I don’t carry a gun for protection.  I carry a gun so I can shoot people in their fucking face that are hurting other people.

hahah well said.

He advocates “being the hero” in this video, which I think is good in theory if everything goes right.  Things could go so wrong though.  I’d argue that in addition to “Alive Hero” or “Dead Hero” a third possibility should be “Alive And Being Charged With Murder, Negligence etc. For Your Shot Not Going Where You Hoped It Would”.  In reality not everyone that carries a gun can shoot as well as Yeager.  How much would it suck if there was an active shooter scenario that you probably could have escaped from, but instead you got shot by a person that wanted to be a hero, and now your either dead, in a wheel chair, have a colostomy bag etc.. etc…? That definitely could happen if everyone that has a gun is all of the sudden full of confidence that they can be the hero of the day. Reminds of an Edmund Burke quote – “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” All I’m saying is that being the hero could be a slippery slope if you get in over your head. If you’re a tier1 HSLD operator and you can Mozambique mofos in your sleep then by all means take care of business.

Thoughts?

If you don’t feel confident in your shooting ability to have the skill to put down an aggressor at a reasonable distance, you should not be carrying a firearm. End of story.

    1. I feel confident making hits at distance. But not making hits at distance through a crowd of panicking people who are moving randomly in every direction. The best course of action for everyone who isn’t Audie Murphy is to cover your escape, not close with and destroy the enemy with your LCP.

  2. I can’t help but feel Yeager’s melodramatic punchlines and key points would be wholly more impactful with a little bit of scripting and maybe even editing… A lot of the time he has something interesting to say, but it could be said in a minute if he was more concise. If he was, and stuck to the point, he’d probably end up waffling a lot less contentious bullshit too.

  3. A man’s got to know his limitaions.

  4. Yeager is a douche-bag – end of story.

I’m surprised Yeager isn’t in prison or hasn’t been sued into poverty with his mindset (as seen here).

  9. i wish there was a mall shooting while he was shopping. It would be fun to see him hiding under the orange julius stand.

First, he’d have to place the electric scooter or merry-go-round in park for that to pan out.

I thought about this video the second I saw the title of this post. Just couldn’t find it. Thanks!

  11. Um… Insert Walter Sobchak voice; “OVER THE LINE!”

  12. Sorry Mr. Yeager, But I am not a LEO. I have zero obligation to protect anyone other than myself.

    1. LEOs don’t either, with few exceptions (i.e. Special Relationship or State-Created Danger)

  13. I work in the offices of a Security company–an office where most everyone carries concealed, and we have a sizable armory on site. You’d think we’d be the first ones to go into “Seek and Destroy mode”–you’d be wrong. Our employee handbook even has a section dealing outlining what we as employees should do if there was an Active Shooter situation in our building, and while it’s about a page and a half long (Where to go, how to check-in, etc)probably the most important part is summed up in about a paragraph.

“…However, attempting to overcome Active Shooters with force is a last resort that should only be initiated in the most extreme circumstances. Unless there is an immediate threat to your life and the lives of others in the immediate area, evacuation should remain your first priority. Under no circumstance should employees actively attempt to seek and engage a Shooter…”

Yea, even though anyone who wanted to start throwing rounds around our building (Which do share with other businesses that are probably more prone to people going postal than we are) would essentially find themselves in an enclosed space with a dozen and a half pissed of guys packing guns of their own–the dangers and legal issues of trying to be a hero aren’t justified if you’re next to a wide open 1st floor window and the other guy is on the other side of the building and on the 10th floor. Personally, my biggest fear would be being misidentified by police and being shot while I’m trying to make my escape. I won’t even guarantee that I’d unholster unless I’m literally trapped in a corner.

That video could cause problems for anyone trained by him if they ever used deadly force much less himself. He reminds me of the guy in the CCW class that everyone rolls their eyes at and hopes he doesn’t actually carry.

  15. 3:19- 3:21 . the line that someone will use in court to make him loose everything . And this douche nozzle will walk right into an attorneys trap. If he was an LEO or CLEO why isnt he anymore ? I think something isnt right in Buck’s portfolio or resume

    1. LEO = law enforcement officer, what does the “C” in CLEO stand for? I googled to no avail outside of Chief Law Enforcement Officer

An active shooter would have to do something incredibly stupid for me to take him on with any weapon I can conceal. Arlington National Cemetery is full of heroes. Everyone of those heroes were better armed than a concealed carry weapon. I have no reason to hasten my demise. Not to mention starting a shootout in a crowded area is sure to end badly.

I’m surprised “Heather” hasn’t participated in this discussion. ROFLMAO.

  19. So what alot of people are saying is that they are worried about getting sued…… In an active shooter scenario the thought would not enter my mind. All I’m thinking about is 1. Sight picture. 2. Sight alignment. 3. Clear background (clear shot). 4. Trigger squeeze. Only emotion you should feel is recoil. There is a reason you are called a sheep and we are called sheepdogs.

If you don’t feel like you could/ would use your weapon to save lives then why do you have it. It’s pathetic really. If you don’t feel confident in your abilities then get more training and quit hating on a guy trying to motivate you to get it.
