So he “stepped down” hahah stepped down… riiiiiiiiiight way to pretend the ball was in your court Jerry
If your new to this story you can read what Recoil magazine editor Jerry Tsai wrote about the HK MP7 in the hands civilians.
On the MrColionNoir video post on the topic I predicted this “stepping down” event taking place. I’m not a psychic or anything.. it was bound to happen.
Jerry “Failsauce” Tsai’s long winded parting statement can be read over at FAILCOIL magazine‘s site, along with a statement from the parent media company.
I get bored easily with useless stuff like this, and frankly I didn’t think this was much of a scandal in the first place so it irritates me that I actually talked about it 3 times. The thing that pisses me off the most is that this OUTRAGE caused them to gain around 1000 facebook fans from the number I recorded the day I found out about the scandal. Like they say… no press is bad press. How old is Paige Wyatt? I’m thinking I should email her and see if she’s down for something scandalous that will net us both scrooge McDuck money and a bigger following.
Thoughts?

Haha Jerry, no job for you!
You guys are all just jealous that Jerry got to work on a magazine and you didn’t.
I’ll be jealous the day he works on a clip.
Videos are so much more influential.
False.
The medium in which content is presented does not affect its cultural impact.
Twilight is not more influential than Batman: The Animated Series and Spaced is not more influential than The Odyssey.
At the moment, I’m a bit pissed because companies that responded IN support of JT and Recoil when I asked them are now claiming that they never did so (so I must be lying) and that they withdrew their support when everyone else did. One of those companies withdrew support minutes before JT posted his resignation. In the meantime, I have documented correspondence with the companies in question, but a much smaller soapbox to stand on. It’s like the Recoil method of PR has gone viral in the industry, and I am not happy about what that says in general.
Tsai “stepping down” means the company still agrees with what he said, otherwise they would have fired him.
I have never visited Failcoil’s webpage, Facebook page, or even so much as looked at their magazine, and I am definitely not going to start now.
I have to agree with this. When companies disagree with employees’ actions they fire the employees and publicly denounce what was said. Letting them step down is tacit consent. I also note that he didn’t even take back what he said in his statement, saying the mistake was calling the magazine’s support of the Second Amendment into question, not his own. The magazine’s statement wasn’t any better, except to say that they give editors a lot of leeway, so it technically wasn’t THEM who said it.
Interesting… yea I see what you mean. Firing him would definitely have been a better move.
I don’t see what the big deal was, it’s not like what he said was wrong. HK is right to keep these things out of the hands of the people.
having a fine troll?
I think the dogpile on Jerry debacle was a disgraceful act by our community
He said he was sorry for his poor choice of words. He took his dummy-lumps, but our community didn’t stop there. They continued the barrage until he finally stepped down to try and save the magazine he started.
We’re better than this.
now heres where i disagree, i feel stepping down is exactly what needed to happen.
here we have the editor of one of the largest firearms publications in the country agreeing that there are certain weapons that are to dangerous for ‘regular’ folk…
what message does that send to your readers?, it pretty much tells them they are ‘not worthy’ of some guns…
what message does that send to the general public?, what it does is perpetuate the myth that assault rifles are somehow inherently more dangerous than “sporting rifles” and that the gun somehow has mystical killing properties.
what message does that send to politicians?, it gives them an excuse to pass more BS gun legislation, they can now hide behind this and claim that “oh, if a major gun publication says that its too dangerous for civilians, then we have industry support to pass our legislation”….
just because you are free to speak your mind, doesnt mean you are free from the consequences…..if you show support for something that is guaranteed to anger 95% of your readers, expect them to be pissed off.
I hear you, M-cameron, but he did apologize. Profusely. But apparently our community doesn’t tolerate any mistakes or accept sincere apologies.
What kind of message are we sending?
The thing is, people seem to think that saying ” sorry” is an instant cure-all. It’s not. Saying sorry doesn’t mean you’ve righted all your wrongs and you are instantly forgiven. It is honestly nothing more than a common courtisy.
If someone wants forgiveness, they need to do something to earn it….in this are it would appear to be by stepping down as editor.
I certainly agree with you that ‘sorry’ doesn’t always cut it.
We also agree that forgiveness sometimes needs to be earned. However, I don’t believe Jerry was ever given the opportunity to redeem himself. Falling on his sword was the only door shown to him.
To me, that doesn’t seem right or fair.
M: You, like most today, like to “do unto others, then whine if it happens to you.”. No one but you, or someone you “like”, is allowed to make a mistake. Apologies mean nothing, when sincere. You want heads to roll, because you’re “tough” and “conservative”. Here’s the rub, kid: A VERY conservative value is to live as Jesus taught: let he who is without sin cast the first stone (sure isn’t you, bub). This did not mean “don’t punish the guilty”. He was saying stop judging others so harshly. Hate the sin, forgive the contrite sinner. How many times? 70×7. The Bible was a tool to teach morality. You missed the point, as God said most would. You are the rocky soil. Change.
Except he did not “apologize”. His first attempt at doing so was nothing more than a longer-winded version of, “Who are you going to believe: me or your lying eyes?” wherein he actually doubled-down on his idiotic first comment and tried to explain to us benighted peons why he was right.
Then, once his hand was well and truly trapped in the cookie jar, he realized just how screwed he was, and then came the crocodile tears… which consisted of his trying to throw H&K under the bus, to which H&K responded in a positively high-larious fashion.
So, sure, if you consider an apology-for-being-caught couched in a lie couched in ignorance to be “acceptable”, I guess we are good to go.
I do not.
The lesson being taught here is know your damned audience, and know what the hell you are talking about before you start spouting off. That someone at that magazine did not stick up a finger and go, “Uh, guys…” speaks volumes as to their disconnect from their intended market.
They may have gotten a few more facebook fans, but they lost more then a few advertisers. Magpul, Haley Strategic Partners, Imminent Threat Solutions, Panteao Productions, Surefire, Silencerco.
But we’ve still to see how many of them come back after his stepping down. My guess is at least some of them if sales and website traffic don’t go and stay down.
Failsauce!? Awesome.
1. Jerry, don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out!
2. Recoil, too litle, too late.
I wouldn’t own one, anyway
i will still advertise with them, i just got a new 3d printer and a glock-stock file. Mail order interweb fortune here i come!
He says he’s stepping down as EDITOR. He used that term twice in his statement. He never claimed he was leaving the magazine. I bet he stays on with the magazine and just takes on some other title.
That would be par for the course seeing how they have tried to hoodwink us all along.
What bothers me the most about this incident is how no one has commented on how truly awesomely that magazine has FAILED. I happened to pick up the most recent copy in a Texas airport the day before it hit the internet. I was never going to buy another copy due to the extremely poor content.
I fail to understand how you can have a review of night vision equipment and never discuss the different generations and their performances and prices, nor is blooming, thermal or fused imaging ever mentioned.
How can you have an article about suppressors and not go int decibels, peak versus continius noise etc…
It is a magazine for those who want to look cool and talk cool about firearms and be very “tactical” { although not tactical enough to own an MP7 ;-) }
I do not think I have ever read a more useless firearms or firearms related magazine in decades, possibly in my life.
The magazine should fail from it’s content, or lack there of, let alone the editorial viewpoint.
NukemJim
I have noticed that the content is all pretty 101. I was hoping it was just the first-few-issues thing, and the depth of content would improve.
Still going to give it an opportunity, if only because the internet version is so cheap.
We’ll see if it gets any better.
Yes, it was an undoubtedly stupid move on Jerry’s part, but this whole witch hunt really does seem to be a little overzealous.
Un-related to said foot-in-mouth moment, does anyone else think that MP7 in the photo above has a ting of rust to it in some places? The rear sight, or above the fire selector? Is this what happens to the guns they show dropped in the mud during testing and on commercials? I never understood the HK love anyways; the AKM family is made from stamped sheet metal and its ridiculed as cheap, the MP5 is as well and its praised as high speed? Sounds like a double standard.
Look at all the armchair operators who wish they could be in the same room with an MP7.
Another question in my mind about RECOIL magazine itself is the apparent support for Obama on their website. You can’t go to a single portion of their site without seeing an ad for Obama. I also saw an ad that was talking about Clinton. Now I don’t care if someone supports Obama or democrats but attached it a magazine like RECOIL that is designed for mil/LEO as well as civilian enthusiasts. Those types of groups usually do not stand on the left side of the aisle!
