Elements To Look For In A Carry Pistol

Buck Yeager and some kid tell you what to look for:

0:43 – For instance HK, just in general the whole company… HK builds greats guns, you can depend your life on HK but they are a bunch of anti-gun f**kwads and you can’t get parts or service for the damn thing.

LOL that’s why I keep watching Buck Yeager vids… pure gold.

2:55 – WTF?  The kid said he would be worried about spending too much on a gun because if he shot someone and the police seized it he would be pissed off.  You can tell Yeager was thinking WTF too.. and quickly changed the subject.

4:12 – Bashes Kel-Tec for not being built to professional standards.

6:30 – Regarding external safeties hahahha the police department didn’t buy Glocks because they didn’t have safties, but they bought SIGs which also didn’t have safeties, because the SIGs had a hammer.

The elements they say to look for:

  • Availability of parts
  • Comfortable
  • Durability
  • 9mm or .45 caliber
  • 4 – 6 lb. trigger pull
  • No external safeties
  • Hammers are unnecessary
  • Ported barrel guns for self defense are stupid
  • Accessories and availability of accessories

  1. Wow. People are supposed to learn from this? Ruger doesn’t have after-market accessories? I am just in it for the Buck Yeager at this point.

  2. Ditto on the Yeager train wreck effect.

No parts for H&K? Bullshit. Their website ordering and inventory sucks, and they don’t distribute spare parts to other storefronts, but if you call their customer service people, you can get whatever you need, and they’ll cut you a nice break on shipping. Unless its a discontinued part, in which case, as with any other firearm, you’re screwed.

  3. So hammers are antiquated technology, safeties are out, and aftermarket parts are a no-no. Can someone please name one 1911 made today that don’t use hammers, don’t have external safeties, or are not complete redesigns of the original 1911? Also, aren’t XD’s always touted as being based roughly on the 1911 design?

My two favorite 45’s in my collection are my Glock 21 and my full size XD (no side safety just the backstrap). For quite some time my Glock 21 just wouldn’t go a full mag without two to four failure to fires. I finally discovered that I needed an updated trigger bar for it, and it’s been perfect since (I do recall one failure to eject since then, though). My XD has experienced exactly ZERO failures of any kind in over 3,000 rounds down range.

Also, who the fuck was that guy standing next to him waiting to suck his dick?

  4. CZ’s are fragile, eh? Compared to what? A block of depleted uranium?

    1. Agreed, those things run forever, from what I’ve seen they have outstanding coatings and service life.

    2. I’m willing to bet he’s talking about the slide stop breakage problem. People have had one break in as little as 1500-7500 rounds. But I don’t get why he bashes it. As he said, parts break.

  5. Pure moronic gold.

I’ve owned HK’s since 1981 and with the exception of buffers for my P9s’s and replacing recoil springs for happy, feel-good maintenance, I’ve never NEEDED parts. The buffers and springs took me all of 2 minutes to find online.

One of my personal heroes is Charles Yeager. This idiot sullies the name.

If this putz could shoot as well as he talks trash, there wouldn’t be a bullseye left black on the entire planet. F*** him and his Nancy-boy buddies.

  6. That whole get off the x .com or wtvr the fuck hes babbling about at the end….just…nah. If you want to get a hold of him EMAIL HIM. He loves that shit. Buck is an email lover. Really. Truly. The Vigilant Spectre and Wombat derp almost 100% guaranteed want to be the next Buck Yeager tacticool school.

  7. Well, Kel-Tecs *are* garbage. Now to wait while a KT troll says what great service they have when he sent his P3AT back to the factory six times to be totally rebuilt.

PF9 withh 500+ rounds through it, no malfunctions. PLR-16, somewhere around 300, no malfunctions. Not saying they are the Larue of mostly-polymer weapons, but they aren’t nearly as bad as people say they are. I trust a PF9 enough to carry one though.

      1. Dont know if you got one made on a Wednesday or not, but I do not share your same luck. My PF9 wont eat 2 magazines before I get a failure to eject or failure to feed. Winchester white box, PMC or even Hydra Shok. I wouldn’t trust my life to it.

I’m glad there are those out there who have a good time with it. I’ll be selling mine, though.

i work at a gun store and i hear that story quite often…about as often as i hear the story called “my kel tec is a POS and i want the LCP instead”. if you have a good one, by all means trust your life to it. but the things that separate companies like keltec from top tier manufacturers is not whether or not they can make a working product, but if they can do it with every (or nearly every) gun that comes off the line.

  8. I’ve got 3 Keltecs and they all function 100% without ANY trips to the factory…and no I’m not a troll.

I also own several 1911s and several Glocks, but the PF9 is my primary carry pistol.

  9. I’m still trying to figure out how a company that makes guns and sells them to people could be anti-gun. Doesn’t that kinda defeat the purpose of, y’know, making guns?

Also, the pic of Yeager that you use on these posts is awesome. I hope that wasn’t pulled from his business website…unless he also owns mancandy.com

I liked this one…but the other dude had a look on his face the whole time like he had just been delivered some bad news. Kinda weird for Yeager who’s loaded with personality to do a video with someone like that.

I for one am grateful for people on YT like JY who actually have personality and who aren’t afraid to ruffle some feathers speaking out against certain manufactures, techniques etc… IMO there’s way too much unnecessary reciting of manufactures specs off of the manufactures website and then close up !!HD 1080p!! shots of whatever followed by ass-kissing of said product meant to…what? blah blah blah. Honestly, if there’s no controversy at all, I’m just not interested that much

Plus the dude has more experience than I’ll ever have.

I remember when I was in college and would try to go head to head with some of my professors when I thought their way of doing things was too one-sided or not mainstream or exactly what the textbook or method book said or whatever. Now that I’m years out of school, it make me realize I should have just shut my mouth and listened to the voice of experience more.

Not saying to put photographers down range or anything…just saying.

    1. “Plus the dude has more experience than I’ll ever have.”

That’s not an accurate statement. JY was a small town cop, went to a few courses, opened a training school and that’s about it. When he started he was OK, but then he started inventing techniques that solved problems nobody had. Now his courses are from bizarro land and he’s drinking his own urine.

PS, how’s the hot chick? :)

  11. I couldn’t even watch this passed 1:50. Seems like I’m seeing more things you post that you complain about being stupid than informative/helpful or really interesting stuff. These “DERPS” (which I still haven’t figured out the meaning) should be pointed out, but it seems like you’re spending too much time on talking shit than putting out good stuff.

  12. Derp. Get it now. Had a good feeling it didn’t mean “cool and smart” but didn’t have the “Websters” version.

I think he could have saved 11 minutes and 30 seconds of everyone’s time and just said I like Glocks. Also his HK comments are pure garbage.

That’s tough to watch. I bet he thinks a Gen 4 Glock is the first firearm to come with interchangeable backstraps.

  16. Another ‘safeties are too complicated’ guy. Hey Buck, safety consists of more than keeping your finger off the trigger. There’s things called children, the untrained, old leather holsters, crowded subways and all matter of stupid shit. Life happens.

Buck: “Hey kid, you want to be in one of my super-kick-ass YouTube videos?!”
Kid: “Hell yeah! What do you want me to do?”
Buck: “I’m gonna ask you what you think, then make you look like a moron! But, it makes me look awesome! —- Hit record, bitch!”

    So basically every major manufacturer.
Glock, Springfield, S&W are going to be the easiest/top three to “live with” with regards to reliability, maintenance, and cost.

  19. I agree with everything this Yeager guy said. Besides, why would anyone want to carry an outed, 100 year old designed handgun (1911)?

    1. I dont know, you might ask why SOCOM still prefers 1911’s. You know that the .50 BMG is close to the same age right? Why is the 100 + year old Mauser design still the accuracy standard? Some things are just great designs that need no replacement.

I recently stopped dropping $4 a piece on Gillette Fusion razor blades and bought a 1960s Gillette safety razor. I buy top of the line blades for 30 cents a piece (they last a week) and get a much better shave, with less burn than any of the fancy multi-blade razors I’ve used. That technology is a few years older than the 1911 and yet, I’m amazed at the performance.

Just because the box says “New” doesn’t mean it’s “Improved”. The Glocks/M&Ps/etc have their place, so does a 1911 and so does a double action revolver.

  20. I had to stop watching after the talk about the gun being seized by the police. The tall guy seems to be mildly retarded, and I don’t think retarded people should be allowed access to firearms.

  21. I have definitely heard Massad Ayoob talk about the fact that when you use your handgun in self defense, it will wind up in a police evidence locker, and you may or may not get it back. So, that’s not so dumb to consider IMHO.

I still don’t understand the problem with .40. Disclaimer, I love .45s, but I have come to realize that the extra pressure leads to greater velocity, greater chance of expansion, and greater shock, the factor that will most likely lead to incapacitation. “If a 9 or a 45 isn’t good enough you need a rifle”. That may be true, but we go out there not knowing what we will face, so we arm ourselves as best we can with what we can comfortably carry.

    1. Yeah, you sort of have to survive a firefight first before worrying about police taking away your weapon. One problem at a time : )

  22. The guy that wrote this series of forum posts disagrees with Buck on handgun loads and he’s got the experience to back up what he’s saying. http://www.mouseguns.com/deadmeat.htm

    1. Rob, that’s been around awhile and it’s a fabrication. None of the facts work. FYI, while Atlanta sucks, it does not have any where near that number of autopsies.

imo, buy what you’re comfortable with, and buy what you like. know the pros and cons of your purchase, and know how to deal with the known issues with that gun as it comes up. don’t let whether or not it goes into evidence enter your mind. if you carry a gun, ANY gun, you carry it for the event that it may be needed to save your life or someone else’s. i love my SIG collection to death, but if one of them saves my life, seeing it go away will pale in comparison to being alive.

in summary, if you know your piece and can use it effectively, carry it. and let no one, including ass-clown yeager, dis you for it.

  24. I don’t get whats wrong with .40s. They get the job done just like 9mms and .45s

Seems like Buck is implying nothing but Glock or M&P is good…. Sigs are good, but they have hammers so that makes them OK in his book.

Also bashed C&R collectors everywhere…..(don’t get a gun unless its for serious use)

  25. I don’t get whats wrong with .40s. They get the job done just like 9mms and .45s

I think the argument against .40s. is ammunition availability. I can walk into a Wal-Mart, K-Mart or Ace hardware, or many other non-gun stores and find at least 12 Ga birdshot, .223/5.56 rounds and at least 9MM or .45 FMJ rounds on any given day. Sometimes when I look the .40 is not there, even in FMJ, let alone hollow point. If that is the reason, I can agree with it.

Ported barrel guns for self defense are stupid

Never having fired one — I’m not going to disagree what it does to your night vision. Anyone have experience?

    Accessories and availability of accessories

That is important — the 1911 models are pretty standard so I can extra mags without sweating it. My 9MM I had to by factory mags. But you should be buying the accessories within months of buying the firearm. I bought a Llama 9MM 1911 years ago. It is and was a crap gun. I didn’t realize it in my youth. I don’t think I could get parts for it if I tried. It taught me a valuable lesson. A good gun will lat for thousands of rounds. A crap gun for hundreds.

  26. I actually agree with everything he said in the vid. Most everything he’s said mirrors what some of the trainers I know have said to me, as well. XD and XDm’s for the most part are solid guns, but from reports from their classes, they fail more than Glocks or M&P’s. Most XD and XDm owners will never put enough rounds or punishment in an outdoor training environment to ever have it be an issue for them or even notice any more failures than the other plastic guns.

What he has to say about HK is spot on. I can go anywhere and get Glock parts. However, there are no places locally that carries HK parts. My only options are online or calling them directly. This is almost always true anywhere.

  27. If I want to hear crap,I’ll listen to this guy (Yeager) but his Yeager namesake sullies the great name of Charles Elwood “Chuck” Yeager, every time I hear about his YT clips and his bashing of anything other than glock.

If I want to know about guns and personal defense,I’ll stick with Clint and Heidi Smith of Thunder Ranch Inc.
Unlike Jimmy Boy of Youtube fame..Clint has “been there and done that” and “downrange”
Mr.Smith was a Marine,S.W.A.T. team and precision rifleman.

So getting rid of the deep he says a DEFENSIVE handgun should be:
Reliable ( he insinuates a proven platform should be chosen )
High availability of parts, holsters, magazines etc
    comfortable to carry
Avoid hammers and external safeties (maybe the antiquated design is not a great reason, but less to manipulate in a hurry and nothing to snag when drawing your gun ARE great things for new or inexperienced shooters )
4-6 lb trigger pull – this is pretty standard for being heavy enough to avoid a negligent discharge under pressure but light enough to maintain accuracy under pressure (hmm…also is pretty standard factory pulls for all the factory guns he mentioned)
No ported barrels….duh…ever shot one? HAD a G19 ported…..one night shoot and I sold it in a week.

Basically the video could be about 1 minute long and match what most defensive instructors recommend already, and I happen to agree with the recommendations 100%, maybe not the stated reasons, but the net result if you want a solid carry gun would get you something you could always stake your life on

  29. Yeah, lets compare our outdated firearms to razors and say “SOCOM” uses them. That’ll make us feel better……. Why would one choose to have 8 rounds over 15 plus? Heavy, low round count and outdated. Nah, I’ll pass thanks!

    1. Are you suggesting that SOCOM operators dont know a great weapon when they see one? They have probably the largest funds in the world, yet they choose the 1911, why is that? Capacity doesnt matter so much in a pistol, its supposed to be your SIDEARM. For a back up weapon stopping power is generally preferable to capacity. If you want capacity, carry an SMG/PDW, Carbine, or Rifle.

      1. Apples and Oranges here. SOCOM guys carry a sidearm. For most civies, the handgun is the primary.

I’ve had a Springfield XD for years and never had an issue with its functionality. The trigger also feels much better that a Glock. Is it an HK class of handgun? No. Is it a proper firearm? Yup. Glocks are nice but there are guns that are equal to or better on the market. I sold my Glock 23 and replaced it with a Walther PPQ. I think I moved up a Tier.
