Beretta Pistol Naming Convention Needs Improvement

I was talking with a friend yesterday about how I was thinking of selling my Glock 21 and buying a Beretta 92.  He started talking about the 90two; calling it “the 92” and there was some confusion because I still thought we were talking about the 92.

Why the hell would Beretta pick two similar names for such similar guns?

Hopefully they have more sense then to name subsequent pistols the 9T2, 9D2, ninety-two, ninety-2, 9-2, nine-two etc…

Can you Imagine?

Future gun store Beretta counter scene:

  • Me: I’d like to see the 92 *points at glass in Beretta case*
  • Clerk: Sure, one second… Here you go *Hands me the 90two*
  • Me: Oh, actually I meant the non polymer one
  • Clerk: Oh ok.. here you go *hands me the 9T2*
  • Me: No, this isn’t the right one either.. the one I want to see is right there *points* the 92.. numbers nine and two
  • Clerk: Oh right.. *hands me the nine-two*
  • Me: Never mind, i’ll check it out on the internet… *hands gun back*

If you have to refer to a gun model by using the Military phonetic alphabet, by pronouncing the punctuation, or by writing it down on paper and showing someone… then that company probably should have reconsidered that model name.

You’re thinking about selling a Glock to buy a Beretta?
    Dude…

hahah yea :/ I don’t really care for the G21 all that much. Figured I might as well try a 92 or a M9 for a while… I can always sell that too if I don’t like it!

I don’t see what’s wrong with that. I too prefer berettas over glocks.

But on the subject, while beretta naming convention does have some issue, they also know how to give awesome name to specific models of their guns like Elite, Centurion or Billenium.

Billenium > * That gun looks UNREAL!!!

  3. Yeah, most Beretta forum guys refer to the 90TWO as “the dash” for exactly this reason.

Supposedly the name makes sense in Italian, as it would be pronounced “novanta – two”. still all kinds of odd though.

I like the nickname idea.. but sadly the gun store guys and most people off forums wouldn’t have a clue what you were talking about it you said “the dash”.

It sounds a lot cooler in Italian.

  4. I recently sold a S&W Sigma to get a Beretta 92fs. Glad I did too.

      Nice!

  5. I see as the 92 series is evolving it’s following the trend of “guns as instruction manuals.” I know the gun will fire if there’s a magazine in it. That’s why I put a magazine into it. Gosh.

The one that takes the cake though is still http://www.fmkfirearms.com/Products/9c1pistol.html

Yea the 92series “warnings” are pretty funny.

LOL that FMK gun has a hilarious amount of words on it. I thought it was a gag site at first.

haha I knew you would appreciate that detail Dan.

  7. I’d recommend you just avoid the confusion for the time being and get a 96. Although I’m sure the 90six will happen sooner or later.

    1. Just cough up the extra cash and get a Sig P226. I think they’ve got enough sense that they won’t come out with a Pee-two-two-six, P22-six, P-two-26, or any other confusing nonsense.

Yea the 96 is nice too, but I don’t really want to get back into .40

  8. this is to beautiful gun i like this

  9. I think the only mistake Beretta has ever made with the 90 series, is taper the dust cover!
I love all versions to date, including the daddy M1951, 92S; regardless of name… but they ruined a work of art when they started tapering the 92/96 dust cover.
(Hollywood wont even use a tapered 92/96 in the movies, its to ugly… and they put Glocks in them, haha)
