I don’t know how I missed this photoset when it first came out.

War truly looks like hell.  These pictures are a good reminder that freedom is not free.

      According to comment #217 on big picture:

      They are barrage balloons (filled with hydrogen) and were used to deter low-level attacks (straffing or dive-bombing) by enemy aircraft.

  2. GREAT photos (as I’ve come to expect from the Boston Globe). It would be so cool to get to be one of the jumpers in picture 40.
