I just wanted to add here (instead of your original post) that I support the lawful carry of firearms in whatever way. As a matter of fact I also support constitutional carry. My whole problem is that, like you’ve said, there are some pluses AND minuses to open carry.
I just hope that people that are open carrying have trained hard, have great (not good but great) gear and that they understand that under pressure they will default to their level of training, not rise to the threat.
I’ve heard the stories of open carriers stopping crimes, but I’ve also heard stories of open carriers being disarmed by bad guys and having their weapons used in crimes.
I’ve Googled this but there isn’t agreement on when this movement started. Do you know?

I have no idea when the movement started. I’m sure the guys at calguns would know about its history in California… but as far as other states go I’m not sure.
