Mosin Nagant with Hi-Capacity Magazine

The media would definitely dub this an evil “Assault Nagant”

This conversion was done on a Finnish m27 in order to increase the rifle’s capacity from 5 to 20 rounds.  There is no information provided on whether the magazine is detachable.

It would definitely make using the M-N as a club much more difficult.

Would give some nice added weight for swinging if that magazine was full though :P

  2. Add a bi-pod, you get a tri-pod for free. Still kicks like a horse, but works like a mule. I would prefer a drum type, even if I had to wind it.

I think your on to something with that drum mag idea Jerry!

    2. Meh! About the recoil – there is a way to install an AK47 recoil-buster on the barrels of the M-N! The result is shown on YouTube. Just instruct bystanders not to stand by to the right and left of your M-N when it goes “Bam”! Same deal applies to Ruger New Blackhawk .45LC’s! I sacrificed some skin cells by thoughtlessly using the two-handed pistol hold on my Ruger. Well, OW-WW!

  3. But you must admit it’s cool! Heck of a rig!

  4. Reminds me of the rare “trench mags” that were made for German Stormtroopers use on Mausers during WWI. I actually enjoy shooting the Mosin and appreciate if for what it is.

  5. A bolt action “assault rifle,” not even a liberal press could make that argument with a straight face. I like my MN the way it is however. For some reason I like stripper clips in my MS and SKS rather than magazines. Probably because their much cheaper and therefore more plentiful.

I sure hope they wouldn’t call it an assault rifle… but I definitely don’t think it would be out of the realm of possibility!

  6. Oh I think this thing is fixed and fed through standard 5 round strippers through the top like the standard MN. The purpose was to keep a soldier in a fixed position firing longer or a soldier crossing no mans land moving forward instead of having to stop as often to reload.

Yea I figured having a removable magazine on that would have been too ahead of its time.

  7. Airrider Avatar

…I suppose if you wanted to call it an “assault Nagant” you could shout “BAM! BAM! BAM! BAM!” as you work the bolt…

  8. Kazaki Avatar

LIES!… The media knows nothing bout weaponry… Theyd call this an AK47…. Just like the m16,m82,glock,berretta 92,Mg42,bb gun…. list goes on an on.. seek out “journalist guide to identifying firearms”..

damn id love to have one of those on my 91/30 tho.. then again I have enough trouble keepin ammo as is.. hehe

  9. i have 5 nagants and i’m fine with the way thay are. if i can see it i can hit it 5 works just fine with me

I’d have to agree. From a historical standpoint it’s pretty neat someone did this modification though.

    2. Adup;

Just load all 5 of your M-N’s and take ’em all long as you sprint across no-man’s land. No need to reload as you go – just drop each empty rifle as you run. 25 shots without reloading? No bad.

okay but where the hell can i find the extension itself, the PART?

  11. good idea but I have a better one and im trying to get to a gun smith to have it taken care of. have a magazine relase area put in with a seperate trigger gaurd. so u can have a detachable magazine.

  12. There’s no way this thing actually worked. It has to be a concept design. 7.62x54r rounds are rimmed which means when they are stacked, they form a curve. This magazine is straight. The only way to get the rounds in this straight magazine would be to have each one laying way in front of the last which would rimlock every round once it got up to the receiver. I know this because I actually made a 10-round extension mag for the mosin and secured a patent on the design, which I will be producing for sale relatively soon. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCi1uNdYgbU for one of my feed test videos.

    1. Strange – I saw a guy on YouTube purposely load an MS by hand so that it was completely rim-locked. It fed just fine, thanks to the Interrupter!

      1. Funny-i saw myself at the range doing the same thing and it wont fed at all thanks to the rim on the rounds! if the gun is rim locked then it wont feed…simple as that

      dear mr. nNagy,

Have you finnished your 10 round extension kit and is it for sale. If so, how much would be the kit. Is it a difficult modification to the Mosin nagant? Please let me know. I am very interested.

  13. Nagy,I keep checking for any updates on your site, now you’re here on this old site, lol.

When’re they going to be available?!!! And what price roughly?? (need one in the uk)

    1. Haha yeah I came across this post randomly while Googling something else so after reading through the comments, I thought I’d mention my mag. I’ll probably be able to focus on the mags a little more after the holidays. No solid timeline yet though.

        Cool. Keep me updated Richard.

  14. Nice one mate.
I dont even know if I can get through uk customs….even though it’s for a deactivated rifle! lol Been very parinoid of buying any mods. But I want one, for sure.

Intresting what you said about the impossibility of a straight mag, I thought it’d be possible, if the rims of the shell ran through runners. But I’ll take your word for it. :) And damn it, cant have a FAL shaped mag for a mosin :( lol, oh well, banana clips! yay. lol

(OTs48/wa2000-esque mosin please. lol. yes, even deact. modding air rifles gets boring. )
Great blog btw, surprised you’ve got no powder pistols on there given the steampunk stuff. three barreled 69cal 9rd revolver in the future maybe? ;)

    1. In theory, you could feed rounds through it, but the interrupters tend to go soft on Mosins after a while so there would be significant potential for the rounds rimlocking before the chamber. Another major problem is that you’d need a follower that could clear that sharp bend when it transitions from mag to receiver and I just don’t see that happening with this design. I think it was probably a concept (or propaganda) photo.

Thanks for the compliments on the blog. I’ve only seriously gotten into collecting firearms in the last year or two (first time I’ve had the disposable income for them, and even so, I’m staying with the inexpensive toys for a while) but may dabble in some black powder designs eventually.

It kinda looks like a photo shop to me, or they just clipped a magazine over the existing one. But I think everyone wants one like Richards. Since you have made a couple comments, about how much are these gonna sell for? And will these be fairly easy to install?

    1. Agreed.
I’m looking at maybe $45-50ish depending on how much they cost to manufacture. They require no modifications to the rifle whatsoever. You just unclip your original magazine floorplate and swing mine into place instead.

count me in for at least 2 :)

  19. where can i get 1, and how much is it?

  20. But wait! There’s an easier answer! The Tokarev SVT-40 uses the identical Ammo used in all of the Mosins. Simply get the magazine/trigger assembly from an SVT-40 and see how it was done by the Russians. They use a removable 10-round magazine, so why re-invent the wheel? A receiver is made in the USA for the SVT-40; the Nodak Spud PSL/FPK (well, not exactly – this receiver is used in the “Fake” SVT-40, called the PSL or FPK, but it ought to be close).

Even with a ten-rounder in the Mosin, it will NEVER be an assault rifle unless you’re built like a gorilla. The Mosin’s bolt action takes a lot of muscle to load up the firing pin spring (22 turns, hard as a rock). My Mosin always wants a really hard whack just to get the bolt handle pointing straight up.

Here are some ideas for improving the M-N action:
    – Stone the action to smooth it and remove hard corners on the locking lugs. Also use lithium grease
on the bolt and the receiver rails.
    – Try the rubbing-compound trick on the bolt to maybe make the action easier/smoother.
    – Cut one or two turns off the firing-pin spring, or use a lighter spring. Just remember that the
cheap Russian ammo has hard military primers in it. Before you cut, have a replacement spring
    on hand.

Once the M-N’s action works half as well as the British .303, then we won’t have to yell “Bam, bam, bam”!

Finally, the MAIN reason why there are so many side-saddle scopes mounted on Russian army rifles is that they preferred to use Stripper Clips to load their rifles. How can a stripper clip be used with a Picatinny mount on such a rifle unless the mount and scope is placed in front of the action, like on a “scout” rifle, using a Long Eye Relief (LER) handgun-style scope? Well, duh! Install a removable magazine.

Congratulations to you and the others who are trying to modfy the Mosins with removable magazines.

Jack has a good idea. A friend of mine has an SVT-40. I looked at it and it has possibility. I’m not into making things anymore, just buying. Please let me know when you get it up and running. stripper clips just SUCK when you have a scope installed. A removable 10-round magazine would sell like Hot Cakes. I will take 4 to start.

  22. Is it Possible to Mount a Bigger magazine such as a Drum Mag Like on the PPSh? is there a way to Mod The Mosin Rifle in such a way?

  23. Thank you for the kind words, Gene. If anybody above has a Mosin whose bolt can be closed and opened without spraining a hand/arm, I’d say go for a removable magazine modification.

If you have a Mosin like mine, a 1927 Izzy, first fix the action, then go for the mag. My Dragoon rifle had to have the chamber reamed first just to get a round all the way into the chamber! Some over-enthusiastic Ivan put a rectangular punch over the joint between the barrel and the receiver at about the 2 o’clock location – the extractor cut in the barrel. This left a steel “zit” poking into the chamber. No way to get the remaining 3/4″ of the shell’s casing into the rear of the chamber.

Even after reaming the chamber, the bolt handle still needs a good kick from my boot just to get the handle upright and break the spent shell casing loose. Something else is going on, because I can whiz through all five rounds if they remain unfired.

Your ideas about what problem #2 might be would be appreciated.

    Jack

  24. Here’s an idea how about a fixed mag like the one that’s one there but higher capity to feed more then one stripper mag in(let’s just say 2. So they sit it mag but have a little extra push to help feed them through. Just a thought other then that detachable mags would be first choice although as someone had said stripper mags are cheaper even if you can figure a way to mod it.

  25. Excuse my horrible writing and missing/wrong wording, its been a long day.

  26. Ever watch a field gun(Cannon) being fired? The barrel slams back pretty hard, but decelerates all the while, then returns to its original position slowly? Hydraulic shock absorbers! Maybe the same sort of system would work on the Mosins. Just build it into the stock. Even bicycles have shock absorbers now.

Nov-24th-2012 Dear Mr Nagy, I hope this note reaches you and finds you doing well. It seems I ……couldn’t email you from “DataMancer”. So I am hoping this catches your attention some how. Anyway, I am a 100% disabled veteran and my health is fairly poor due to problems caused by spinal trauma, and the debilitating neurological impairment and pain that goes along with it. I am only on a small disability pension and found the mosin nagant to be a reasonably priced answer to go to the range with. I first found your post on the 10 round mag and was really excited because of my injuries and nerve damage, my manual dexterity and strength in my arms and hands is limited. I have a “Leopold” site and it sets right above where the stripper clips insert. I need the site because my eye sight is VERY poor resulting from my neurological impairment and really need the site in this case. So I am forced to load each and every round through the breach. Trying to get it in between the breach and the sight is not an easy task for me. So I have been waiting and watching patiently until you get these babies on the market. I have given up going to the range because it is a lot more trouble, more bothersome and painful than I thought it would turn out to be. So I was hoping to get an update of when you were going to have these available. If you happen to see this post, you can email me directly at [email protected]
I tried to contact you through your website, I am not sure whether it is me or problems with the web site but for whatever reason if you cannot contact me via email, you can , If you please, drop me a post card with an update on the 10 round mag via snail mail to….. J. Troop, 413 Francisco way, kissimmee, Fla. 34758
I am hoping these are available soon as the range is the only thing that gets my mind off my medical problems. I am here alone with nothing to do and rarely have a worthwhile reason to brave the pain and discomfort of going out as this alone is a task for me. Thanks Mr Nagy, hope to talk soon…..Jeffrey

  29. Im interested in the 10 round clip. How could i get one

  30. Chris Avatar

I want at least 2, maybe 3 if the price is right. Keep it nice and low and you’ll do more business. :-) I’m considering buying an Archangel with detachable mags, but this would be a more affordable option! Just joined the email waitlist for more updates…

  31. I’ve been dreaming of an extended mag for the Mosin since I bought my first one the week I turned 18. There are a lot of haters of the cheap “dime a dozen” rifles but while they have valid arguments, those who love them will always love them. It’s like a first car. No matter how ugly you never forget it. If there is ever one available for sale, even a prototype I would certainly jump in line.

  32. im done waiting for this mag extension. im just gona drop a couple bills on the archangel and get detachable mags. u snooze u lose

  33. Heartland has a 10 round mag for the Mosin Nagant. http://www.heartlandffa.com

  34. Id rather use the stripper clips with the 5 and one chambered, but, Im only saying this because i dont have this wicked looking 20 mag.
im also not hunting packs of wild boar and for home defense I always thought the cruciform bayonet would get the job done if i could get it on or off without looking like a jackass aha
